Year 3

Literacy, Spring Term

This term Year 3 are studying Volcanos and Fossils. In Literacy children are currently writing Historical stories about Mount Vesuvius, the volcano that erupted in Pompeii, Italy, in AD 79 and led to many people and buildings being buried for years.

Year 3 will also be writing Newspaper Reports to cover the impact Mount Vesuvius had on the cities of Pompeii and Rome.

Key Literacy Skills, Spring Term

-I can draft and write in narratives, creating settings, characters and plot.

-I can give well-structured descriptions, explanations and narratives for different purposes, including for expressing feelings.

-I can draft and write in non-narrative material, using simple organisational devices (for example, headings and sub-headings).

-I can maintain attention and participate actively in collaborative conversations, staying on topic and initiating and responding to comments.

-I can plan my writing by discussing writing similar to that which I am planning to write in order to understand and learn from its structure, vocabulary and grammar.

Year 4

Literacy, Spring Term

This term Year 4 have been learning about Underwater creatures in their Blue Abyss topic. They have also been learning about potions and have found out about the history of anaesthetic.

In Literacy, children wrote Dilemma stories. They are currently writing letters, and have written letters from Doctors, describing operations.

-I can understand what I have read in books I have read independently by checking that the text makes sense, discussing my understanding and explaining the meaning of words in context.

– I can plan my writing by discussing and recording ideas.

-I can draft and write by organising paragraphs around a theme.

-I can evaluate and edit by assessing the effectiveness of my own and others’ writing and suggest improvements.

-I can proof read for spelling and punctuation errors.

-I can use conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions to express time and cause.

Year 4 Literacy

 

Year 5

Literacy, Spring Term

Year 5 have been learning about Allotments. They have been reading ‘The Secret Garden’ by Frances Hodgeson Burnett and designing gardening machines. They have written their own ‘Secret Garden’ stories and have compiled instructions on how to plant herbs.

-I can draft and write by selecting appropriate grammar and vocabulary, understanding how such choices can change and enhance meaning.

-I can evaluate and edit by ensuing the consistent and correct use of tense throughout a piece of writing.

– I can understand what I read by summarising the main ideas drawn from more than one paragraph, identifying key details that support the main ideas.

– I can evaluate and edit by proposing changes to grammar, vocabulary and punctuation to enhance effects and clarify meaning.

– I can maintain positive attitudes to reading and understanding of what I read by identifying and discussing themes and conventions in and across a wide range of writing.
